Douglas Dowers Afternoon Class

2 Watches.  One with only hour hand, the other with only minute hand, requiring one person to wear both watches, or two people to work together in order to tell the time.

Toilet paper.  Rarely a single use object, still a very private-use object.  In private homes and public places the toilet paper roll is used by person after person, always appearing germ free and for one's singular use.  Dividing walls, anterooms, locks, and other strategic design elements provide a sense of private use about the toilet paper roll.  If these walls were removed, a world of negotiation would ensue. It is one thing to crack open the bathroom door and yell to your housemates, "Throw me a roll!"  and quite another to sit down next to someone, share your business, and bother them for just a square.

Danielle St. Hilaire's Negotiated Objects

(Forgive the poor quality of my sketches. My scanner, she is a harsh mistress..)

Danielle St. Hilaire’s Negotiated Objects

<- Probably my favorite idea, this started off as a two person gas mask. When thinking about objects only used by and for a single individual, this popped out immediately. Gas masks are used for chemical warfare, but in today’s world with the masses ever present ‘fear’ or ‘terrorist attacks’ they’ve got a whole new outlook and need for civilians. Looking to the SARS outbreak, or even the smallpox/anthrax scare, it seems like individuals were isolating themselves more given the fact that everyone could possibly be a carrier and a potential portal to death. In light of this, I created this idea.
<-Individuals wearing piece.
<- However, after thinking about it, why stop there? After brainstorming, I thought up of a more futuristic object, an eight person hookah mask where instead of tobacco or.. other substances, one consumes fresh air. In the center would be one big filter and connected would be eight long pieces of tubes attached to masks. This could be a statement on future concerns with pollution, chemical warfare, etc; it has more versatility then before. Only two factors I would see causing a problem would be price and function. I could fake the appearance of a functional filtering mask, but in reality I wouldn’t know where to begin to make it work to the point of filtering out like an actual mask could..

<- This is my six person pogo stick, nothing super artsy about it I just thought it’d be really fun. As far as craftsmanship is concerned, the pogo sticks would have the grips removed around the handles, welded together and then re-gripped (also added would be pretty ribbons as the sketch details.. Yay!) The bottom were the person’s feet would go would also be welded together to form a tight grip.

My first idea for the project which now seems impossible is the giant rubix cube. The craft wouldn’t be to hard after dissecting the toy itself, but with time and space restriction, this probably wouldn’t be the best project to pursue. Basically, the cube itself would be 54”x54”x54” and suspended at least a foot above the ground. It’s girth would be too great for one person to handle so many participates would be encouraged to join. There’d be two matching 1” faux cube stool to match to aid in looking on top of the structure.

<- Eight person tug o’ war, a game version of the project perimeters. The object of this isn’t to see who can pull who where, it’s to see who can make it out of bounds first with the last person within losing. Reason I thought this would be interesting was the fact that if eight people are pulling in eight different directions, nothing is likely to happen. Negotiations would have to take place between individuals, be it alliances, bartering, cheating, lying, cooperation, etc. The game could be as simple as a coherent and civil cooperative negotiation, or, it could get ugly.

<-Boundary lines and person placement from above.

Double vision. An ideological idea I thought would be cool but not quite practical. There would be two sets of glasses. On the outside lens would be cameras and on the inside would be small screens. However, the feed for each camera would be altered so the person on the left would see what the person of the right does and vise versa.

<-Walking in another person’s shoes was one of my first ideas along with the gasmasks. The concept is a principle we’ve all known but rarely have we experienced it. At first, the idea started out as these skis-like planks for two people. They’re be two planks and each person would strap one foot to one plank. If you’ve ever played Mario Party for N64, it’s a lot like the game Desert Dash for reference
<-Desert Dash Screen Cap However, this idea also evolved with further consideration and talking it over with others to just one single plank where only one foot was joined and the other was free. This tiny bit of freedom could lead to a bit of tension and turmoil as well as an added difficulty to manipulating the object as the group pleased.
